colgin likes to curse
it's been over a year since our last post. today's church events have inspired me to share with you the latest of our little terrible two monster. colgin turned 2 a little over a month ago and is a talking machine now. he is obnoxiously loud but doesn't pronounce a lot of his words clearly. in fact, a lot of his words sound like curse words. it started about 6-7 months ago when we put him down at night and we would always tell him 'night night, i love you.' he responded with "nai nai - F you!". patrick and i got a kick out of it every night and didn't bother to correct him much. fast forward few months later "frog" sounded like fu%*. i brought him to my office this past friday where there was a kermit the frog in someone's cube. he grabs it and runs around the cubicles yelling FU%* FU%* over and over. i take him home immediately. then come easter sunday today. there was a combined service with the "big church". because i'm a bad mother, i didn't have time to feed colgin breakfast. so when communion started and the main church's pastor was breaking bread for communion, colgin was so hungry, he stood up and yelled BITCH, BITCH!! like about 5 times. it was harder to convince everyone around me that he was actually trying to say BREAD since it didn't sound even remotely close. at least he was able to semi-redeem himself when lunch started and he grabbed a roll from the table and yelled BITC&*!! MORE BITC&*!! and as i'm typing this, he is pulling a BLANKET and telling me, 'give me my BITCHES'

Colgin updates
Colgin has been walking for sometime now and is getting pretty good at it. He has advanced past the walking stage and begun to climb stairs and climb down stairs. Sometimes he gets carried away and thinks that he's a big boy, so he tries to grab the rail and walk up the stairs. This is when my anxiety level jumps up a bit. Here's some video, check it out.

New York Trip
We recently took Colgin on another trip to New York for a friend's wedding. Once again poops did a great job on the plane ride with no crying and no frustration. When we got there the weather was pretty cold with temperatures hovering around 12 to 25 degrees during the entire weekend. I'll give a summary of our trip with pictures enjoy!
This was our first stop on our first full day of New York. We went with an FOB tour of New York on a Van because it was cheap and way too cold to walk around. This place is some hole in the wall breakfast place that Chinatown that had no restrooms for customers and offered only congee. Notice that Jade has Colgin wrapped up nice and comfy in front of her in his moby wrap. Not long after this Jade tripped outside of this place and sprained her ankle. Colgin was fine but mommy was not. Everyone outside that witnessed this was concerned about the baby and only the baby.
This is Jade right after the fall. She enjoyed the majority of the tour from this position.

Jade is arguing with our FOB tour driver that the place that we want to eat is not in India town. He just didn't want to drop us off over there.
Jade looking so cool, so New York!

On top of Rockefeller Center.
The hotel was nice enough to lend us a wheelchair for Jade to use. Unfortunatly, New York is not a very handicapped friendly town and finding wheelchair access ramps in the subway system suck. You never really notice how many people are in wheelchairs until you are pushing one around. FYI, there are no wheelchairs being used in New York. Everyone looked at us as if we had brought over the plague from Houston. I guess if you can't walk in NY, you just stay home. I love New York, but hopefully next time we can go and enjoy the city in normal temperatures and with a bi-pedaling wife.
Peace!!

Colgin's 9 month checkup (and standing on his own!)
Colgin had his 9 month appointment Thursday last week (a little early because we were going to be out of town later) and he didn't gain a pound but grew an inch (so he's 10% in weight and 50% in height...boooo). Doctor says to offer him more food but he also noticed how active Colgin was during the appointment and said not to worry since Colgin seemed more active than most. He's always eaten a lot (like adult portion man) so we aren't really doing anything different now except we don't feel as bad stuffing him with food.
He got his H1N1 shot also - which i was nervous about mainly because of my own ignorance around the vaccine but we now like to randomly look at Colgin and say "you got swine flu in you!" Not very PC but yeah...entertaining to us.
Anyway - so another milestone to celebrate! Later on that day, Colgin stood for at least 15 seconds on his own!! He does it here and there but randomly so we haven't been able to capture it on video (not that we are even trying anymore...i don't even know where our camera is...gosh). So yeah - we were pretty excited about it. We can't wait until he takes his first steps!
Lastly - since we haven't posted in such a long time, here are some pictures from Halloween of him. He won the costume contest at the Fall Festival at St. Luke's! He was surprisingly good in the pot.

Blowout at Macy's
this was like a month ago. forgot to share this memorable moment in macy's fitting room. this was one of his biggest blowouts (front and back looked the same). at least this was before he started eating solids so i would categorize it as mildly stinky to be less dramatic.

satisfied baby - look how comfortable he looks here

Colgin hasn't grown that much since his last appt 2 months ago. He's gained 1-1/2 pound and an inch which is about 50 percentile in weight and 75 in height for his age (17 lbs 4 oz and 24"). FYI... his poop is starting to smell really bad now probably because of the solids. =)

Colgin Sucks
i avoided introducing a pacifier since i didn't want any potential latching issues with nursing. in addition, i always liked the idea of less dependency on certain items and letting him figure out ways to self-soothe.
so what happens? now at 6 months, the boy cannot stop sucking his thumb. the only time he will remove the darn thumb is when we feed him or when he's smiling. every bite of food he takes, he finishes it off with his thumb (we call it his chaser). he also thinks his thumb is some conduit to everything. e.g. he reaches for our drinks and when he gets at least one hand on it, he sucks that same thumb as if it were a straw to the drink. he does that for anything he wants to put in his mouth. he grabs it and sucks the hand that has a hold on it.
come the introduction of the pacifier (finally). he liked it but didn't know how to keep it in his mouth for long. when i bought him a pacifier clip (so it would always be clipped near him), he would grab the pacifier and clumsily insert the HANDLE part in his mouth instead. yeah, he didn't look the brightest baby and we coudn't justify to every discerning eye that we introduced him to the pacifier late. but the more important point is - he preferred the thumb than the pacifier handle. in fact, after the whole pacifier ordeal, he has been sucking BOTH thumbs as if he were trying to make a point that i failed.
so colgin has always done this really adorable smile where he tucks his lips in. but we recently figured out his lips are tucked in because he's SUCKING them! no WONDER he actually removes his thumb when "smiling." i was so disappointed. i thought he was just an extra-happy baby...all those times i thought he was smiling at me, he was just trying to "self-soothe" with his own lips. :(
lesson learned? if you plan to keep pacifiers away from your newborn, make sure you introduce it to them as soon as they prove to have no latching issue...before they start a worse habit of thumb or lip sucking, which is much harder to wean (minus the use of tabasco). i'm seeing lots of $$ towards braces in the future for this sucker.

Colgin's first real trip
MVI_1031, originally uploaded by Ah Mui Liu.
We took Colgin on his first flight last week to Atlanta, GA to send Auntie Charlotte off to Georgia Tech. He was so well behaved on the plane (slept most of the way to and from), we are already thinking of the next trip to take!
Here is a video my mom took while she babysitted Colgin in the hotel while Patrick, Christian and I went to watch a Off-Broadway show (Grease!).
